The clear dragons of this realm are bound to crystals that allow them to travel through time riding beams of concentrated light. Kakush, the Grand Librarian, first discovered this method of time travel, and has since traversed the time stream collecting secrets. The clear dragons have kept the secrets of Arcania and the multiple dimensions of the Wyrm Gate safe for as long as light has existed, staying out of the squabbles of men and monsters. However, his recent disappearance left a power vacuum amongst the clears, and the secrets of the cosmos vulnerable to the growing threat of the Dragon Slayers.
Few snow dragons have ever been seen in Arcania, causing their existence to become the stuff of wive’s tales, the most famous being the story of Boreas of Ice and Mielikki of Umber. It is said that Boreas lived alone in the icy Wraithlands until one day he came upon Mielikki just over the southern border, where the trees meet the snow. Dragon mating rituals remain mysterious even now, but it is said that Boreas brought Mielikki an Ice Rose from the unreachable Wraithland Fields for ten moons. Entranced by the rose, Mielikki fell in love, and soon, Khione, Daughter of Snow, took to the skies.
“Darling, Last night, we razed a small northern village under King Athromark’s direct command. By now you must have heard the rumors. They are true. Don’t ask me how, but the king has tamed a horde of silver dragons. He teaches us to ride. In the sky, everything is beautiful. Even enemy villages. It won’t be long until I am back with you. Every day, I grow more confident in our victory. With the silver dragons, I am certain this conflict will soon end. I cannot wait until we are reunited. The only thing I’ll miss is the sky…” A letter intercepted days before “The Last Battle” of King Athromark III and King Mothar Vangard. The author died in battle.
“I do not wish to go to war, but it appears Lear will force the subject. He is a devilish man consumed by the Black, unworthy of the seat he occupies. Had only the Queen Mother lived, perhaps this family squabble could have ended with quills instead of swords. Verdante flies overheard more often now. Scouting. I have left signs for him to come to me. He is the natural protector of the northern region; it is only sensical that he and I become allies. Perhaps soon. To think: Verdante could be my very own Guardian dragon, like in the stories Aunt Lidia would read to Lear and me before bed. So much has changed. Why do I feel so old?” From King Mothar Vangard’s Personal Journal, Days Before the War
Kokai is believed to have sprung from the same accursed nest as Draxis. But unlike her brother, she rarely meddles in humans affairs on land, being content with making the high seas nigh impassable for all but the mightiest warships. Along with Methestique and Drasmorx, Kokai is the reason fishery only takes place in shallow waters along the coasts of the Arcanian continents – venturing further out is considered so dangerous that “sailing out” has become synonymous with “suicide” in a handful of coastal dialects.
Kurang is the leader of the Imperial Brigade, built from a hive of a dying orange breed and fused with technological innovation. Beyond the Wyrm Gate, where dragon slayers ride mechanical beasts to fight fire with fire, the Orange dragons of the Brigade are unique in nature. As bio/mechanical hybrids, they retain the hive-mind built into their biological DNA, allowing Kurang to control his brethren from across the world. While Kurang wages war on the Empire’s enemies, he remains at war with himself as his natural side combats the mechanical implantations that have made him a monster.
